Northwest Health Foundation Invites Letters of Interest for Healthy Eating Active Living Grants

June 21, 2012 -- The town of Odell sits just five miles away from the famously active community of Hood River. But until recently, Odell residents – 40 percent of whom are Latino – lacked one of the key components to staying active themselves: a city park.That changed last summer, due to funds from Oregon State Parks and the Northwest Health Foundation – as well as a community engagement process the Foundation hopes to see other communities repeat with a newly available grant award.

Freelancers Co-Op of Oregon begins search for top-level management

May 30, 2012 -- The first of two Oregon nonprofits to receive startup funding from the federal government announced last week that it is seeking a director of finance and a director of operations. It has also hired Rick Koven as its interim CEOThe Freelancers Co-Op of Oregon, started with assistance from the New York City-based Freelancers Union, received $59 million from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to start a cooperatively-owned and operated health plan in the state. So far, Oregon is the only state to receive funding for two co-op health plans.

OHSU Researcher receives $1 million grant to pursue AIDS vaccine

May 21, 2012 -- Researchers have been looking for a way to vaccinate against human immunodeficiency virus since shortly after the virus was discovered 30 years ago. A few -- including OHSU immunologist Louis Picker -- have made major strides toward a vaccine formula. But the virus continues to outsmart vaccine prototypes, largely because the onset of AIDS is not caused by a single pathogen. Instead, it's caused by what immunologists call a "swarm" of pathogens.
