Confidential Sources Say Salem Health Spending $2.5 Million on Japanese Training

Hospital executives traveled to Japan recently for an immersion experience in Kaizan, the Japanese term for continuous improvement

Yet that hasn’t stopped its president, Norman Gruber, from announcing $30 million in cutbacks while, at the same time, purchasing two primary care clinics

March 2, 2012 – The Oregon Department of Justice makes it quite clear – nonprofit entities such as hospitals are required to provide audited financial statements every year that show their net worth, the salaries of their top executives and the benefits they provide the community in order to remain tax exempt.

At the same time, Norm Gruber, president of Salem Health, is exploring the feasibility of creating a physician-hospital organization

January 19, 2012 – Salem Health has announced that it’s opening a new clinic in May, known as Willamette Health Partners Family Medicine in West Salem. It will be staffed by three physicians who currently practice in the Salem Hospital campus clinic -- Drs. Rashanda Brown, Patricia Otis and Anna Techentin.

Yet, that property -- located at 1049 Edgewater St. NW – had been owned by a prominent member of Salem Health’s Foundation Board – Paul Gehlar.

Dr. Bart McMullan Joins Salem Health Board of Trustees

January 18, 2012  The Salem Health Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that J. Bart McMullan, Jr., M.D., of Portland, has accepted an appointment to the Salem board. McMullan brings valuable health-care experiences, from roles as a physician, administrator of a medical practice and insurance companies, and as a health-care-reform leader.

He’ll represent the two-hospital system in the February legislative session

January 11, 2012 -- Mark Nelson, president of Public Affairs Counsel, has been hired to represent Salem Health, a regional two-hospital network that includes Salem Hospital and West Valley Hospital.
