Before Sonya Justice became a nurse 15 years ago, she had her share of misconceptions about the profession.
Her heritage is West African, and her family had encouraged her to choose a profession such as engineering, law or medicine.
The Oregon Health Authority’s (OHA) Transformation Center has awarded Health Share of Oregon a $3.4 million Transformation Fund Grant Award to support the coordinated care organization’s (CCO) innovative programs and pilot projects that are working to transform health care delivery in the Portland Tri-County region.
The president of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians says the CCOs are taking credit for the work of family physicians to set up primary care homes, but others cite a greater use of community health workers in Oregon ER’s for improving health and keeping down Medicaid costs.
Antibiotics are prescribed less often in Oregon than in other states, but their unnecessary use continues, and that can lead to more cases of potentially deadly drug resistance, state public health officials say.
