PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Participates in National Clinical Trial to Find Cure for Post-Operative Heart Attacks

About one in ten people who undergo a non-cardiac surgical procedure could suffer a heart injury referred to as a myocardial injury after a non-cardiac surgery or MINS. In total, approximately one million adults worldwide will die within 30 days after experiencing a MINS. PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center is proud to announce that it will be participating in an international clinical trial to find an answer to this baffling medical issue.

“This trial will allow us to test several promising protocols for preventing these post-operative incidents,” said Dr. Arturo Salazar, one of the project leaders. We already know how to determine if a patient is at risk and will be instituting screening procedures for the appropriate patients at this stage. Now we just need to drill down to the best method of preventing further complications.”

The trial will draw together multiple PeaceHealth medical departments including the Department of Hospital Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, Anesthesia and the Emergency. While screening for at-risk patients will be necessary, participation in the trial will be strictly opt-in only.

“We see this as an opportunity for our patients to receive the very best and—in this case—advanced care available,” said Dr. Salazar. “All patients will be screened to help ensure the best patient outcomes – but opting in for participation in the trial will be by request only.”

The trial is in the process of enrolling participants – its goal is 160 medical centers in 28 countries over a two-year period.
