The state could have 70% of the population inoculated by late spring or summer, according to the Oregon Health Authority's chief epidemiologist Dr. Dean Sidelinger.
The university can only enroll several hundred people in a clinical trial, given its timeframe, so it is picking volunteers who are at high risk of severe symptoms and infection.
People who are obese face a high risk of complications from COVID-19 but experts hope that they'll be protected along with people who have diabetes or high blood pressure, for example.
It’s not immediately clear when the first vaccinations will begin, although a spokesperson for the Oregon Health Authority suggested it may be Wednesday.
