About five years ago, Oregon adopted an innovative Medicaid system that enabled the state to expand health care to nearly 1 million people today. But the system does not have a steady source of funds. This year Oregon's Medicaid funding gap was $950 million.

Oregon’s former Medicaid Director Lori Coyner returned to the role Jan. 28, filling the vacancy she left in 2017. Her return comes in the midst of the state’s application process to cover the health care of about 1 million low-income Oregonians over the next five years.
