Founding Editor of The Lund Report Steps Down

Longtime Portland-based journalist Courtney Sherwood named editor-in-chief
March 31, 2017

In April 2009, I launched The Lund Report with very few resources but a determined spirit. I was convinced Oregon needed an independent news site – free of advertising – that told the truth about what goes on inside our healthcare system.

As an investigative news reporter, I’d spent nearly two decades writing about the healthcare industry as the founding editor and executive director of Oregon Health Forum, and I refused to let any obstacles stand in my way.

It didn’t take long for The Lund Report to become known as the watchdog of the industry with frequent stories about the finances of Oregon’s hospitals and health insurers, mergers underway that hadn’t been publicly announced, leadership changes at the highest levels and efforts to transform Oregon’s Medicaid system and create coordinated care organizations. .

Today, The Lund Report is stronger than ever and considered the most vital source of news about Oregon’s healthcare industry. Additionally, our dedicated board members believe it’s essential to keep our nonprofit organization alive and vibrant.

Our full-time reporter in Salem, Chris Gray, does a masterful job covering the Oregon Legislature, while our freelance reporters never miss a mark keeping tabs on the latest health policy developments by attending Oregon Health Policy Board and Oregon Health & Science University board meetings, to name just a few.

Today, The Lund Report is read by more than 40,000 people in the Pacific Northwest, and our articles are often quoted at legislative hearings and republished on the Northwest News Network website sponsored by Oregon Public Broadcasting.

For the past eight years, I feel extremely privileged to have been Executive Editor of The Lund Report. It’s been a wonderful ride!

But now it’s time for a new chapter in my life, and I’ve handed over the reins to Courtney Sherwood, an eminently qualified journalist who’s now editor-in-chief.

Even though I’ve stepped down, I’ll still be around, occasionally writing stories, and managing the breakfast forums held by Oregon Health Forum for the time being.

Thank you, our many faithful readers, for believing in my mission – to create a more transparent and accountable healthcare system – by reporting the facts and the analysis that makes a difference.

And please keep reading The Lund Report. We’re here for you!

Thank you Diane.  For asking tough questions.  For being fearless.  For caring so deeply.    For over a quarter of a century, your reporting has charted the storms, breaks, currents, ebbs and flows of Oregon's unique and evolving health system. Transparency that raised questions that made change.  What a legacy to leave behind.  It's great to know you're not going far....
