The new executive director of the Association of Oregon Community Mental Health Programs began her career in Texas’ public health department, where she managed a diabetes prevention and control program.
“I noticed our clients with diabetes more often than not always had a serious issue with depression,” she said. “Diabetes goes hand and hand with a lot of our major killers—heart disease, diabetes, cancer.”

More than two dozen states nationwide that have developed guidelines for prescribing prescription pain pills. In Oregon, two task forces are looking at tightening prescribing guidelines for acute and chronic pain patients to try to stem overdoses.
The governor has received financial support from both union and corporate sources, including $5,000 from Centene, the health conglomerate that snatched up the Lane County CCO and has its eyes on others. Her opponent, Dr. Bud Pierce, a Salem oncologist, has relied on a split of individual donations and his own wealth.
