May 15, 2012 -- Tobacco costs Oregonians at least $2.4 billion a year in direct and indirect costs related to smoking and tobacco use. That’s over $13 per pack of cigarettes sold, nearly three times what the smoker pays. A recent report by the American Lung Association and Penn State University estimates that tobacco costs Oregon even more at $3.3 billion a year or $18.83 per pack.

May 14, 2012 -- Four years ago, public health officials in Oregon developed a program for adolescent sexual health that national experts are now pointing to as a blueprint.“I think what we find interesting about the Oregon program just to be very upfront is not just that it's a strong one, but that it's a leading one,” said William Smith, executive director of the National Coalitionof STD Directors in Washington, D.C.

Volunteer Physicians Line up Support for Uninsured in the Columbia Gorge

May 14, 2012 -- The idea behind Project Access NOW, a network of 2,800 volunteer physicians providing care to low-income patients in the Portland metro area, is spreading up the Columbia Gorge.Hood River County officials have been meeting with Project Access organizers to replicate the program’s success and keep people who are uninsured out of hospital emergency rooms.Trish Elliott, nursing supervisor for the county health department, hopes the fledgling program can serve 1,000 people starting June 1.

FamilyCare Goes Head to Head with Tri-County Medicaid Collaborative

May 10, 2012 – The Portland metropolitan area is likely to see two coordinated care organizations vying for Oregon Health Plan members starting August 1.Initially, the intent behind the creation of a tri-county collaborative was to include all the five health plans currently providing such care – CareOregon, FamilyCare, Kaiser Permanente, Providence Health Plan and Tuality Healthcare.

OSPIRG Foundation Critical of Rate Increase Proposed by HealthNet

May 10, 2012 -- Small business owners insured by Health Net could see their premiums increase by an average of 8.8 percent starting August 1.If HealthNet’s proposal is approved, it would affect 38,492 Oregonians – nearly 29 per cent of its 134,000 members across Oregon and Washington. The rate hike is necessary, according to HealthNet,because its prescription costs have risen by 11 percent and medical costs by 8.9 percent since 2011.
