Ratepayers in our region could save at least $1.7 billion over the next 17 years if the Columbia Generating Station nuclear power plant on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington State is closed according to a new report by McCullough Research.

The federal government has just over a year to give the Oregon Patient Safety Commission federal authority for data collection so that hospitals can comply with requirements for Cover Oregon. The commission’s director plans to appeal directly to Kathleen Sebelius for a waiver for Oregon’s hospitals while she waits to hear if her organization will be approved.

The author suggests that hospital systems be managed as public utilities to deal with the spiraling use of expensive technology.
