Fluoridation: A Statement in Favor

Author says that artificial fluoridation is inexpensive, has no demonstrated risk, and offers considerable financial, medical, and dental benefits.

OPINION – August 27, 2012 -- My personal experience with fluoridation began by growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, an area with naturally high fluoride. I noticed two consequences. First, my teeth and those of the kids I grew up with now have very few cavities.

Portland City Council Schedules September 12 Vote on Fluoridating the Water

Anti-fluoridation activists gather signatures and question fluoridation campaign

August 24, 2012 -- Comedian George Carlin once joked that everybody complains about their local tap water, and nobody brags about it. Not so in Portland. “Portlanders pride themselves on having some of the best drinking water in the world,” said Kim Kaminski, executive director of Oregonians for Safe Drinking Water, a Portland-based nonprofit that opposes adding fluoride to municipal water supplies throughout the state.

The Battle over Portland’s Water

Author concludes that there’s no consensus that fluoridation is safe for human health

OPINION – August 22, 2012 -- For months, there has been a behind-the-scenes, coordinated effort to fluoridate Portland’s water. It only came to light when the Oregonian broke the story August 10th that commissioner Randy Leonard was going to lead the effort. Since then, Nick Fish and Mayor Sam Adams have come out in favor of it, which points to at least a 3-2 vote in the Portland City Council to approve it. There have been reports a vote could be coming quickly, as early as the first or second week in September, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Philomath Citizens Vote to Resume Public Water Fluoridation

March 13, 2012 -- The residents of Philomath voted in favor of water fluoridation this week, reversing a prior decision made last May from their city council to end fluoridation after over 30 years.  Their vote ensures that their community will once again have all the health benefits of fluoridated water. Dismissing un-scientific arguments against fluoride, this election recognizes over 60 years of research that supports the safety and effectiveness of fluoridation as the best public health solution for protecting every citizen’s dental health.

Drs. David Cutsforth and David Grube, Philomath physicians, helped lead a petition drive to get measure 02-76 on the March 13 special election ballot. The campaign was launched by a group of community members called Citizens for Healthy Teeth.
