Eric Hunter has long been intrigued with Oregon’s coordinated care approach, gaining a firsthand glimpse into the pioneering idea after meeting with former Governor John Kitzhaber in 1991.

As a staffer for Oklahoma Governor David Walters, Hunter had been asked to step in, at the last minute, to meet with Kitzhaber because his boss had another obligation. Since then Hunter has kept a keen eye on Oregon’s innovative approach.

Now he has the opportunity to bring his experience with Medicaid programs and provider relations to Oregon as the new CEO of CareOregon.

Hunter firmly believes it’s essential to coordinate all aspects of the healthcare system, working with various provider groups to increase access to patients and increase their information to enhance care.

“Healthcare is truly about the whole person and coordinating across the continuum,” he told The Lund Report.

Hunter intends to work together with all the players -- stakeholders, state and local officials, the payers and the healthcare community – to strengthen CareOregon’s role in the community.

Currently Hunter is the chief operating officer of Boston Medical Center Healthnet Plan.

”All 12 members of our board were actively engaged in the process,” said Vickie Gates, board chair. “And they unanimously support the decision to name Eric as the fourth CEO in our 22-year history.”

“We were seeking a leader who can bring fresh, innovative ideas to the task of health care integration, while retaining the spirit of collaboration, innovation and commitment to community that is at the heart of CareOregon,” said board member Dr. Glenn Rodriguez, who chaired the search committee.

Hunter has held a number of leadership positions and has worked for community-based, provider-sponsored and not-for-profit health plans. He also brings experience with Medicaid programs and provider relations, as well as familiarity with mental and behavioral issues facing the community.

The board began its national search for a permanent CEO in fall 2015 following the resignation of Patrick Curran. Scott Clement has led the organization as interim CEO.
