Bruce Goldberg Is Alive and Well

The former director of the Oregon Health Authority says he's taking life easy and any rumors about his succession plan are unfounded.

Walking into the lobby of the Whitsell Auditorium at the Portland Art Museum last night to attend a movie sponsored by the Jewish Film Festival, who should be standing a few feet away – none other than Bruce Goldberg looking quite relaxed in his blue jeans and T-shirt – no longer in his business attire.

When asked about the rumors circulating that he might be taking a position at Oregon Health & Science University, doing consultant work or moving to Arizona as some people have hypothesized, Goldberg said there’s no truth to any of those reports.

Instead, he’s busying himself visiting his four-month-old grandson in New York and his elderly parents who live in that city as well.

In a recent article published by The Oregonian, Goldberg, who ran the Oregon Health Authority, then was the interim director of Cover Oregon, had been shown the door by Gov. John Kitzhaber. But Nick Budnick, The Oregonian’s healthcare reporter, learned that Goldberg has continued drawing a full-time salary from the state after returning to his full-time position with the Oregon Health Authority on May 15, and the former director is using his accrued vacation pay until July 18.

Goldberg announced his resignation with Cover Oregon at its April board meeting., While there, he earned a monthly salary of $3,606.25 a month, and consulted with Clyde Hamstreet, his successor, before returning to the Oregon Health Authority, which is now led by Suzanne Hoffman, interim director.
