After a mastectomy, Sophia Bassan developed painful shocks that radiated through her chest and back. At one point, her cat, Emi, simply brushed against her skin and caused pain so intense that Bassan screamed. She is one of many women afflicted by post-mastectomy pain syndrome, or PMPS. “Doctors act like it is so rare, like they’re so baffled,” Bassan says. “But this is statistically predictable.”
