YWCA Clark County Luncheon Focuses on Foster Care with Speaker Derek Clark.

September 13, 2017

On September 27th, more than 450 people will come together to celebrate the greatness of those working to empower children and youth in foster care. The Clark County CASA Program and Independent Living Skills Program will be featured at YWCA Clark County's annual fundraising event. Guest speaker and rapping dad Derek Clark will share his insights as a veteran of, and expert in the foster care system.

Locally, the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Program supports more than 140 volunteers who provide voice for children in foster care. Volunteers are appointed to the court by the CASA Program of YWCA to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don't get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system, or stay in inappropriate group or foster homes.

The Independent Living Skills Program (ILS) assists youth in foster care successfully transition from state-supported care to independent living. Education, resources, and advocacy focused on housing, education and employment are used to empower program participants to define and achieve goals.

Derek Clark is well known as one of the most inspiring and knowledgeable speakers on foster care. Having experienced tremendous abuse, abandonment and numerous psychological misdiagnoses, he experienced overwhelming feelings of distress and anxiety. Derek was connected to a foster family who afforded him the opportunities to achieve greatness and become a force of inspiration, change, and hope for others. Derek attributes part of his happiness to pursuing rap, and continuing it to this day as a way to process feelings, information and relate to others.

Join YWCA Clark County on September 27th for an enlightening and entertaining glimpse into the world of foster care, and to learn about ways you can also help empower children and youth in your community.
