Summer wellness series kicks off June 1 with Zumba on the Half Shell

More than 150 people attended the 2014 event

WHAT: Kick Start Douglas County (KSDC) is a community wellness collaboration that promotes, sponsors and provides free or low-cost access to activities and events that support healthy lifestyles. The wellness program kicks off at 6 p.m. on June 1 at Stewart Park with Zumba on the Half Shell and continues throughout the summer.

Umpqua Health Alliance (UHA), Douglas County’s coordinated care organization, has teamed up with Architrave, ATRIO Health Plans, Mercy Medical Center, The News-Review, Roseburg Parks and Recreation, the YMCA and others to implement this program, which encourages people of all ages and ability levels to get active as a means of getting healthy. Program organizers already have more than 300 activities planned through August, most of which are free. UHA is encouraging everyone to participate in at least 10 events. WHEN: Monday, June 1, 2015 from 6-7 p.m. at Stewart Park on the Half Shell (Located on the

WHERE: west side between Garden Valley Blvd., Stewart Parkway and Stewart Park Drive)

WHO: The kickoff event is open to people of all ages and ability levels. Event organizers from UHA, Mercy, ATRIO Health Plans and the YMCA will be in attendance.

WHY: At least 150 minutes a week (or 2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity can put you at a lower risk for heart disease, stroke and other diseases.

Kick Start Douglas County was created in 2014 by Umpqua Health Alliance, Douglas County’s coordinated care organization (CCO).UHA is one of several CCOs in Oregon that is implementing projects such as this to help improve health for members of the Oregon Health Plan. KSDC is a program that supports the “Healthy Lifestyles” high-level strategy identified in Douglas County’s Community Health Improvement Plan.
