The second class of osteopathic medical physicians to graduate from the Oregon campus of Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) will be awarded their diplomas beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2016 on the Samaritan Health Sciences campus in Lebanon. Lori Sobelson has been selected to serve as the keynote speaker for the College of Osteopathic
Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest (COMP-Northwest) Class of 2016 commencement exercises.
Sobelson is Director of Corporate Outreach for Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods Inc., based in Milwaukie, Oregon. Bob’s Red Mill is a dedicated supporter of WesternU COMP-Northwest and the medical school’s mission.
Sobelson holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Operational Leadership from George Fox University, where she graduated magna cum laude. Upon completion of her education, she worked in a variety of fields before being offered a position at Bob’s Red Mill in 2003. The company, founded by Bob and Charlee Moore, produces stone-ground whole grain flours and meals along with cereals, legumes, and many other products. Along with her education, Lori’s lifelong passion for nutrition, and her love of teaching as well as cooking, set her up perfectly to play a vital role in a company focused on providing nutritious foods worldwide.
The Moores’ first stone milling business began in Redding, California in the 1970s. The project started out as a family business with their three sons. Two of their sons carry on that legacy today. “Then, after a number of years in Redding, Bob and Charlee moved up to Portland to go to seminary school,” Sobelson explained. “While walking around near the campus in Milwaukie (Oregon), they came upon an old abandoned flour mill on Roethe Road. When she saw the “for sale” sign, Charlee knew they would be starting a new milling business.”
“I first discovered Bob’s Red Mill in 1982, after seeing a television segment featuring the business, and found it to be a wonderful source of the healthy foods I was seeking,” Sobelson said. “Getting to know Bob and Charlee, gaining an understanding of their passion for healthy foods, and watching the business grow over the years made going to work for them an easy decision to make,” Sobelson said. “Because of our common understanding of the important role food plays in one’s life and health, it has been a good pairing for all these years.”
In her role at Bob’s Red Mill, Sobelson is entrusted with managing the Moores’ philanthropic endeavors, which focus on nutrition education and research. Understanding that knowledge is pointless unless put into action; it is vital to include support for community programs that serve as vehicles to deliver research results to the public. Sobelson oversees Bob’s Red Mill’s outreach program, which allows her to work with a variety of like-minded organizations, including WesternU COMP-Northwest. “I’m really excited to work with the medical school in different capacities, and I look forward to seeing what Bob’s Red Mill and COMP-Northwest can accomplish in the future through our partnership,” she said. Sobelson said she is honored to give the keynote address for WesternU COMP-Northwest’s second graduation.
