Senate Passes Bill to Protect Parental Rights of People with Disabilities

February 9, 2018

Salem, OR - Today, the Oregon Senate voted to pass Senate Bill 1526 A, which prohibits the court and the Oregon Department of Human Service from removing a child from their parents' care based solely on a parents' disability. The bill was introduced by the Senate Committee on Human Services, and has bipartisan support.
"I believe I was elected to provide equality of opportunity and equal justice for all" said Senator Tim Knopp (R-Bend). "This bill is an important step towards ensuring parents of all abilities have equal justice."
The bill would prevent an emotional illness, mental illness, intellectual or developmental disability, or other disability from being the sole reason to place a child under the state's jurisdiction, if the court does not find any additional conduct or conditions that are seriously detrimental to the children.
