Regional Partners Support Early Kindergarten Registration Campaign

April 15, 2016

Portland, Ore. -- April 14, 2016 -- Starting kindergarten is an exciting and emotional experience for parents and their children. Early registration for kindergarten creates a connection to the school to make sure families receive important information and helps schools get ready for children
entering in the fall.

FamilyCare Health is proud to promote early kindergarten registration among residents of the tri-county area with the Kindergarten Counts campaign. Kindergarten Counts is a community wide campaign that is bringing together early childhood and school partners to promote successful kindergarten transitions. The unified tri-county campaign urges families to register children for kindergarten by June 1, 2016.

Early kindergarten registration is linked with improved academic achievement for low income children and increased parent-initiated involvement, but those who can benefit the most from transition practices are least likely to receive them.

"Early registration for kindergarten helps everyone," says Brett Hamilton, FamilyCare Community Engagement Manager. "Families receive helpful information, schools get an early read on teacher and resource needs, and children get to start their educational journey on a positive note."

FamilyCare has coordinated this project in partnership with Early Learning Hubs in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties and with Health Share, another local Coordinated Care Organization.
