American Family Care Portland (AFC) announced today that it will now offer coronavirus testing to people without health insurance. The move was made possible by recent actions of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“The AFC team worked hard to implement this program to ensure any Oregonian, regardless of means, can receive testing services,” said Guru Sankar, Managing Partner. “Widespread testing is critical in the fight against this virus and for the safe re-opening of Oregon.”

In addition, AFC plans to be the first outpatient clinic in Oregon to implement an FDA authorized antigen-based rapid test for SARS-Cov-2. This new testing platform, which AFC will begin using in the coming weeks, will make AFC clinics capable of providing both virus and antibody tests simultaneously – with results available within 15 minutes.

AFC Urgent Care is working with more than 500 Oregon companies on Return to Work Testing Guidelines based on best practices and CDC standards. Testing can be completed at one of the five AFC Urgent Care clinics in the Portland Metro area or at an employer’s facility. Last week, AFC launched its first on-site tests at a large assisted living center in Portland. The company completed over 50 COVID-19 tests in one day for residents and staff. Public and private employers wishing to implement Return to Work testing guidelines should call Dan Reese at 503-730-5968.

AFC is committed to partnering with state and local officials by leveraging its private testing capacity to help meet testing goals. The State of Oregon does not currently include testing as a guideline for business reopening. However, with the arrival of rapid, inexpensive tests, public and private employers should consider testing as part of an overall safe return to normal operations strategy.

American Family Care (AFC), headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, is one of the largest networks of urgent and accessible primary care clinics in the nation. American Family Care (AFC) was founded by Dr. Bruce Irwin and opened its doors on June 14, 1982. There are currently 44 American Family Care locations in the state of Alabama, with 18 in the metropolitan Birmingham area. Now serving more than three million patients a year in 236 locations over 25 states, American Family Care (AFC) is a backbone of the American healthcare system.

AFC Portland opened in 2011 and independently owns and operates five urgent care clinics in the Portland Metropolitan area. For information on local clinics, visit their website.
