Portland Race for the Cure Within Striking Distance of Fundraising Goal

September 11, 2013

September 11, 2013 - This Sunday, September 15th, Susan G. Komen Oregon & SW Washington celebrates the 22nd annual Portland Race for the Cure at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. This event is the Komen Affiliate’s largest annual fundraising event, raising significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement. It’s a time to celebrate survivors and their families while working toward the promise of ending breast cancer forever.

With thousands of walkers, runners and breast cancer survivors registered so far, the Portland Race for the Cure is within striking distance of its $2.5 million fundraising goal. There’s still time to register online through Thursday, September 12th. Participants can register in person at the Registration and T-Shirt Pick-Up Event from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, September 14, Crowne Plaza Hotel, 1441 NE Second Avenue, and on Race Day, Sunday, September 15th starting at 6:30am in Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

The effectiveness of Komen Oregon’s mission is entirely dependent on its network of supporters. Money raised by Race participants helps expand access to lifesaving screening and treatment while providing funding for cutting-edge breast cancer research.

New features of this year’s include: a Race Village of area vendors; Team Tent Row for the most successful fundraising teams; the Registration and T-shirt Pick-Up Event sponsored by OHSU; new Team and Individual awards for Best Team Tent Décor, Largest Team, Top Fundraising Team, Best Team Costume and Top Individual Fundraiser.

This year there will be no Health Expo. There will be no shuttle busses to the race. We strongly encourage participants to carpool or use public transportation.

Additional Trains and Busses on Sunday

MAX and Tri Met will have extra trains and busses running on event morning to serve Race for the Cure participants. For more information, go to TriMet.org.

About the Susan G. Komen Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate

For the past twenty years, Susan G. Komen Oregon & SW Washington has provided tens of thousands of low-income women access to critical breast cancer screening and treatment. Our 360-degree approach is making a difference, with breast cancer mortality rates down and five-year survival rates up. We save lives and provide critical care to low-income women. We remove barriers – through education, transportation and screening – and provide support services from the moment a woman picks up the phone. We provide:

  • Screening for low-income women: The collaboration between Komen Oregon & SW Washington and the state of Oregon provides about 8,000 mammograms a year in Oregon alone, the largest screening resource for uninsured and underinsured women in the state.

  • Removal of barriers: Komen Oregon provides women and their families – especially in rural areas – access to transportation so that patients have access to treatment. We fund patient navigator to assist women and their families from the moment they pick up the phone.

  • Providing critical local care: 75% of Komen Oregon & SW Washington dollars stay local to support low-income women with life-saving resources. For the past 21 years, Komen Oregon has directed more than $20 million toward breast cancer screening, education, transportation and survivor support.

  • Investing in cutting-edge research: 25% of donated funds are pooled with other Komen Affiliates to fund global breast cancer research. Komen has invested more than $685 million in cutting-edge breast cancer research. Researchers at OHSU and Providence Cancer Center are part of a global network focused on aggressively addressing the most difficult questions that remain. Every major advance in global breast cancer research in the last quarter century has been touched by Komen dollars. Local researchers at OHSU and Providence Cancer Center are part of Komen’s global network of researchers working to end breast cancer forever.
