(PORTLAND, Ore.) Sept. 1, 2016— PacificSource Health Plans invites Oregon business leaders and human resource professionals to attend a free Leadership Forum on Thursday, Sept. 22, on the topic of employee drug and alcohol abuse. The forum will offer employers and supervisors insights on how to spot warning signs that an employee may be abusing drugs and/or alcohol, and offer advice on how to legally and efficiently intervene and find a solution that will mitigate an employer’s risk. The 90-minute forum will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at PacificSource’s Tigard office (13010 SW 68th Pkwy.), as well as via an online webinar.
The forum discussion will be led by Jerry Gjesvold, manager of Employer Services at Serenity Lane Health Services, a nonprofit treatment center for alcohol and drug addictions. For more than 30 years, Gjesvold has specialized in matters of policy and procedures related to the management of alcohol and other drug problems in business and industry.
“So many times it is not until an incident happens that an employer or risk-management team begins to understand all the signs of a troubled employee that they might have missed,” said Gjesvold. “What tends to transpire is that supervisors often try to avoid conflict or are afraid to be wrong, and that helps perpetuate a crisis. We want supervisors to not ignore the indicators.”
