ATLANTA – The Rheumatology Research Foundation recently awarded James Rosenbaum, MD, with funding for his research project in rheumatology.
Dr. Rosenbaum is head of the Division of Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases at Oregon Health & Science University. In addition, he is head of the uveitis clinic at OHSU Casey Eye Institute and chief of ophthalmology at Legacy Devers Eye Institute. He received the Foundation’s Innovative Research Award, which supports independent investigators as they pursue ideas that could lead to important breakthroughs in discovering new treatments and cures. Dr. Rosenbaum’s study, The Microbiome, IgA Coated Bacteria, and Joint Inflammation will study if the translocation of microbes from the gut to the joint contributes to inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Rosenbaum was among 63 rheumatology trainees and professionals who recently received awards from the Foundation. The recipients, ranging from medical students and residents to experienced investigators and rheumatologists, will receive funding for essential education and training, as well as innovative research projects. Their applications were closely examined by experts in different areas of the field through an extensive peer review process.
In the 2018 fiscal year (July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018), the Foundation will fund awards totaling $9.97 million. Additional awardees will be announced later this year.
