October 25, 2012 -- The Oregon Medical Association is pleased to announce that Bob Dannenhoffer, MD, has received the third annual Dr. George E. Miller Patient Safety Award. The award was presented on October 13 in Portland at the OMA’s Political Fall Forum, which gathered physicians from across the state to hear from local and national experts and elected officials on issues impacting health care.

The award is named after George E. Miller, MD, a pediatrician and dedicated advocate for improving patient safety, who passed away in 2007. Dr. Miller was appointed by Governor Ted Kulongoski to the Oregon Patient Safety Commission upon its formation in 2004, and he served as the Commission’s first board chairman. His 30-year medical career in Oregon also included service as Medical Director at Salem Hospital. Dr. Miller epitomized compassionate care and service to his community. We honor him in the presentation of this award.

Bob Dannenhoffer, MD, a Roseburg pediatrician, is an innovator in the area of disclosure to patients regarding events that occur during health care. He spearheaded the early disclosure program at Mercy Medical Center and is featured in the OMA/CNA program on apology and disclosure. Further, he is at the forefront of health reform in Oregon, serving on the state’s quality metrics committee as well as in the leadership of the Douglas County Coordinated Care Organization, Umpqua Health Alliance. In his spare time he is CEO of the Douglas County IPA. Dr. Dannenhoffer truly puts patients first and we know Dr. Miller would be pleased that he is receiving this award.

The Oregon Medical Association is an organization of over 7,500 physicians, physician assistants and medical students organized to serve and support physicians in their efforts to improve the health of Oregonians. Additional information can be found at www.theOMA.org.
