October 10, 2012 -- The Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN) announced today the release of its latest research brief, “Oregon Nurse Faculty Workforce 2011.” In a state where registered nurses are the largest component of the healthcare workforce, an adequate supply of nurse faculty to educate the next generation of nurses is essential to ensuring the health of all Oregonians.

OCN’s latest report is an update to its 2009 Oregon Nurse Faculty Workforce report. “The data we discovered in our latest survey was surprising,” said Mary Rita Hurley, Executive Director of OCN. “The statistics and demographics of the nurse faculty workforce have not changed much in recent years. The question is ‘should we be worried?’”

Nurse faculty and nursing program administrators can provide the best insight into whether a nurse faculty shortage is on the horizon and whether Oregon has sufficient nurse faculty to sustain the current levels of nursing student enrollment.

“Recruiting and retaining the next generation of nurse faculty will take many stakeholders,” said Hurley. “Oregon’s academic leaders and current educators are needed to help lead these efforts.”
