February 21, 2012 -- Between February and May 2012, the Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN) will offer free in-person and webinar courses to current and student healthcare professionals who would like to increase their cultural competence skills with patients and co-workers as part of the Cultural Competence Network (CCN) event series.

For many years, researchers and practitioners have advocated for culturally competent health care, citing its positive effect on patient quality of care. With support from the Oregon Community Foundation, OCN created the CCN to spread interest and awareness of the importance of cultural competence in delivering healthcare. CCN events address a wide range of topics, from providing culturally competent health care for Somali/Somali Bantu populations to exploring cultural competency learning activities for nursing students.

“Learning about the different aspects of diversity and cultural competence is the first step to becoming more culturally competent,” said Mary Rita Hurley, RN, MPA, executive director of OCN. “We hope the Cultural Competence Network will build a network of advocates and be a catalyst to spur more interest in cultural competence around the state of Oregon.”

For more information on the OCN’s Cultural Competency Network and events, please visit the OCN website at www.oregoncenterfornursing.org or contact Kelley Ilic, Program Manager, at 503-943-7150 or [email protected].

The Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN) is a non-profit organization, established by the nursing leaders in 2002 with a mission to promote a well-prepared nursing workforce dedicated to providing care and leading change to meet the health needs of our communities. OCN fulfills its mission by educating nurses to embrace leadership opportunities, developing certainty through research, advocating for effective outcomes and stimulating collaborative innovation.
