Non-Profit Health Republic Welcomes New Members in Oregon

Governed by members, Health Republic puts profits back into member benefits, not executive salaries
October 15, 2013

October 15, 2013 – Health Republic Insurance (www.peoplenotprofits.com), a non-profit health plan, announced its health insurance plans for Oregonians today, available as part of the Cover Oregon exchange established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Unlike traditional health insurance companies, Health Republic is a 501 (c) 29 private non-profit governed by its members, and by law must reinvest all profits back to providing better care and lower costs for members.

Health Republic offers comprehensive and affordable coverage specifically targeted at individuals, families and small businesses as part of the Cover Oregon system and directly from “Health Republic is redefining what a health insurance company should be,” said Dawn Bonder, CEO of Health Republic. “Every decision we make, every benefit we offer, and every solution we develop is focused on our members’ health and finances. In short, Health Republic is the only non-profit Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (CO-OP) providing access to care in all parts of Oregon. It was sponsored by Freelancers Union, which has been advocating for the rights of independent workers and under-represented Americans since 1995. While Health Republic has sister CO-OPs in New York and New Jersey, each CO-OP is available to any Oregonian and care is offered through the statewide Providence Network. This partnership offers members an extensive group of providers, practitioners, and facilities, including 60 hospitals and thousands of providers, labs, imaging locations and physician clinics throughout Oregon and SW Washington.    Additionally, Health Republic is committed to ensuring members get the care they need, when they need it, where they need it, and is offering members robust complementary care coverage for providers such as chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians and acupuncturists.   Also offered are patient-centered Medical Home plans, which provide a more integrated health care experience for members managing chronic conditions or who have multiple health care providers. Medical homes are conveniently located clinics across Oregon whose health care providers specialize in working as a team to integrate care for patients. Access to the health care team is available by visit, phone or e-mail, allowing a patient’s health care providers to efficiently manage health care goals.   “Just like community banks and credit unions have improved the customer experience in financial services, we will do the same in health care,” said Bonder.   Anyone who lives in Oregon will be able to purchase health coverage with Health Republic; reasonably priced plans are available for individuals, families and small businesses. Individual  or family payment assistance may be available through federal government tax subsidies based on estimated earnings.
