New Pediatrician Takes a Holistic Approach to Caring For Your Kids

November 9, 2016

HERMISTON, OR – Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) is pleased to announce the addition of Pediatrician, Daniel G. Canal, M.D., to the Good Shepherd Medical Group Pediatrics practice in Hermiston.

Dr. Canal is coming to Hermiston from St. Louis, MO, where he progressed his pediatric community health research. When asked what drew him from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Canal said, “I’ve had the pleasure of working in a variety of great hospital settings with great doctors. I also had the chance to interview all over the country. When I first came to Hermiston, I had a feeling the Pacific Northwest and Good Shepherd would be where I hoped to end up.”

“The team at Good Shepherd is a friendly group of professionals dedicated to patient care. Throughout the recruitment process and my visits to Good Shepherd, the team was very proactive in providing any information I requested and was extremely interested in ensuring that I would be a good match for the patients (children) and parents. Most medical facilities I encountered were just worried about getting a new doctor, not for my best interest or the communities. Here, the team made sure that I would be a good match for Good Shepherd and the patients I’ll serve. Together I believe that we are going to improve the pediatric care of the communities we serve.”

For Dr. Canal, Hermiston’s location was another plus, “I am an active person, so I wanted to be somewhat rural and close to the outdoors – I love to fish, hike, garden, and eat the food that is produced. I also wanted to be in close proximity to larger cities, Portland and Seattle – which will provide plenty opportunities for urban exploration. Truly, I love to travel and explore new places and meet new people.”

As for patient care, Dr. Canal is very expressive about his approach, “I am naturally a caring and understanding person. I plan on working with children and their parents, grandparents, foster parents, support persons, or whatever the case might be. I take a holistic approach to patient care and don’t discount anything. I want to help kids be balanced and maintain healthy lifestyle habits as they progress into adulthood. Bottom line, I care about a child's future. I will work with parents to understand potential health issues, illnesses, and hazards – and be their pediatric support for years to come.”

When asked what his favorite part of being a pediatrician is, Dr. Canal expressed, “I enjoy hearing the point of view of children, and having a chance to see the world through their eyes. They see things so much differently than we do as adults, their’s pure joy, and excitement in how they view the world. Each moment I’m with a child it reminds me of just how fascinating our world really is.”

Dr. Canal is welcoming new patients – babies to pre-college age – as part of the Good Shepherd Medical Group Pediatrics office located at 600 NW 11th Street, Suite E-33 in Hermiston.
