PORTLAND-- Matt Morton, Squaxin Island, will leave the Native American Youth and Family Center and join the Meyer Memorial Trust as the Director of Equitable Education Monday, January 4, 2016. The NAYA board of directors will commence a national search for his replacement early next year.
“NAYA is an organization much bigger than any one person. We are a community, a culture, a social and economic engine. As I leave my role at NAYA, I'm eager to engage the community in other ways as NAYA continues its commitment to being youth-centered, family-driven, and elder-guided,” said Morton.
Under Matt’s leadership the organization’s operational budget has increased by approximately $2 million, adding new critical services within early childhood education, as well as housing services for foster youth and elders.
“We are excited for Matt’s new opportunity, he has done a wonderful job leading this organization,” said Eddie Sherman, Diné /Omaha, chairman of NAYA’s board of directors. “We are confident NAYA will be a stable and healthy organization during his transition.”
Tawna Sanchez, Shoshone-Bannock/Ute, NAYA’s current director of Family Services, will step in as interim Executive Director during the transition. “I’ve been with the organization through five executive leadership transitions. I have no doubt the organization will be successful through this one,” said Sanchez, who has been with the organization for nearly two decades.
Morton served as NAYA’s Executive Director since July 2012, and was the organization’s Deputy Executive Director a year before. He will be honored by staff for his accomplishments and dedication to Portland’s Native community Friday, December 18 at 3:30 pm.
