NARAL Statement on Confirmation of Trump's Anti-Choice FDA Commissioner

May 10, 2017

NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long issued the following statement following Scott Gottlieb's confirmation to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

"The Trump administration's hostility toward women and reproductive freedom just got a lot worse with Scott Gottlieb's confirmation. Now, we officially have an FDA commissioner who has actually opposed coverage for birth control, despite the fact that it's a basic and critical component of reproductive healthcare for countless women. His persistent attacks on reproductive healthcare and Planned Parenthood are exactly what you'd expect from someone selected for a leadership role in Donald Trump's administration. It's deeply disappointing, though not unexpected, to see him take on this new role."

Scott Gottlieb has opposed numerous policies that protect women and families, including the life-saving Affordable Care Act and the contraceptive coverage policy included in that landmark law. Following the release of the inflammatory and deceptively edited videos intended to defame Planned Parenthood and attack reproductive rights, Scott Gottlieb pointed to them as “unarguable proof that current laws governing the fetal-tissue trade don’t work.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as "one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America."
