In an effort to help lower the incidence of injuries in teens competing in upper-extremity sports, Momentum Physical Therapy owner and physical therapist, Melanie Embree, and a team of training/rehabilitation experts will host a series of 13 training sessions for Central Oregon high school and middle school athletes.

Titled “Pre-Season Training for Overhead Athletes,” Embree says the foundation of the series of sessions is injury prevention and optimal sport readiness for upcoming seasons. Upper-extremity sports include baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis and some track and field events (e.g., javelin).

Sessions will be held at the Bend Elks Fieldhouse starting with baseline assessments on Friday, Jan. 17. Twelve more sessions per age group will be held each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon/evening from Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Thursday, Feb. 27. Cost for the training series is $260, or $20 per session.

“We’ll focus on injury prevention and sports readiness by basing the training sessions on the kinetic chain concept of force production, or how the body most efficiently creates maximum power for arm propulsion,” Embree said. “We will emphasis good training form for optimal carryover to good sport form.”

Embree will be joined by two other experts in functional training: Lisa Wolf, a personal trainer and advance fitness specialist/health coach, and Jen Powell, who boasts and Masters of Science in human movement. Sessions will be held each night from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. for high school athletes and 4:45 to 6 p.m. for middle school athletes. Class sizes will be capped at 25 athletes per session.

Athletes can sign up for sessions by calling Momentum Physical Therapy at 541-647-2969 or by emailing [email protected].

According to Embree, an increasing number of young athletes are opting to specialize in one sport quite early in life, which leads to an increased risk of breakdown and overuse injuries. By offering these sessions, she is providing the opportunity to detect and address deficiencies in areas where athletes are most susceptible to injury in order to prevent long-term problems.

Embree is an active supporter of STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries, a national campaign geared toward preventing athletic overuse and trauma injuries, providing guidance on healthy and safe athletic participation. The STOP Sports Injuries campaign was initiated by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in partnership with several other medical- and sports-advocacy organizations.
