Medicare Advantage 2016 Spotlight: Enrollment Market Update

May 11, 2016

A new data spotlight from the Kaiser Family Foundation examines the growth in the number and share of Medicare beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage, with enrollment in the private plans reaching 17.6 million in 2016 and increasing in virtually all states over the past year. The data spotlight presents national, state and firm-level Medicare Advantage enrollment trends. It shows that enrollment among Medicare Advantage plans continues to be concentrated among a few insurers. The pending mergers (Aetna-Humana and Cigna-Anthem) could further concentrate this market if regulators approve them without requiring the companies to shed any of their current business. The spotlight also analyzes the most recent data on Medicare Advantage premiums, out-of-pocket limits, Part D cost sharing, and plans’ quality ratings.
