September 9, 2013 – Dr. Walter Lopez has joined Medical Teams International (MTI) as the organization’s new Guatemala Country Program Manager. Dr. Lopez will oversee the humanitarian relief and development organization’s health programs in that country. Medical Teams International’s programs in Guatemala are focused on the health of rural communities including prevention and community case management of malnutrition, acute respiratory infection and diarrhea and improving maternal health. To date, MTI has trained and is actively working alongside over 400 community volunteers throughout Guatemala. “We’re thrilled to have someone with Dr. Lopez’s health program management experience and medical expertise at the helm of our efforts in Guatemala,” says Mike Wenrick, MTI’s Director of Latin America and Caribbean Programs. “His demonstrated commitment to improving the health of the world’s most vulnerable and extensive knowledge of languages and culture in the rural communities we serve make Dr. Lopez ideally suited to helping improve the health and lives of the people of Guatemala.” Dr. Lopez is a graduate of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. He has more than 17 years of experience managing health programs including serving as Director of Health for Alta Verapaz at the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance/Guatemala and as Project Manager with IntraHealth International’s Central American Capacity Project. Dr. Lopez most recently worked as a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist for Mercy Corps Guatemala.
