Kaiser Permanente Northwest Presents the Portland Free Premier of HBO’s Documentary 'The Weight of the Nation'

April 27, 2012 -- WHAT: The obesity epidemic affects 97 million Americans and contributes to six of the 10 leading causes of death in this country. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults age 20 and over are overweight or obese, while one-third of the nation’s children and adolescents age two to 19 are overweight or obese. This epidemic hasbecome one of the most urgent health issues affecting our nation.To address this rising concern, Kaiser Permanente will host a free screening of HBO’s four part series, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION, on May 7, 2012, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

April 27, 2012 -- WHAT: The obesity epidemic affects 97 million Americans and contributes to six of the 10 leading causes of death in this country. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults age 20 and over are overweight or obese, while one-third of the nation’s children and adolescents age two to 19 are overweight or obese. This epidemic has
become one of the most urgent health issues affecting our nation.

To address this rising concern, Kaiser Permanente will host a free screening of HBO’s four part series, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION, on May 7, 2012, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The event will feature a screening of HBO’s Number Four film of The Weight of the Nation series, “Challenges.” Before the screening, you’ll hear from Ken Gordon, noted restaurateur and author of the “Diary of a Diabetic Chef” column in the Oregonian. Afterwards, there will be a Q & A session.

The goal of this event is to create continuing dialogue about improving the health of the community, a critical component of individual health and wellness. Kaiser Permanente is focused on improving the total health of the nation, and is committed to providing education and resources that support a healthy lifestyle.

In The Weight of the Nation, HBO aims to help launch one of the most
far-reaching public education campaigns on this epidemic to date. The series debuted exclusively on HBO and is composed of four documentary films, a three-part HBO Family series, 14 bonus shorts, a social media campaign, a book published by St. Martin’s Press and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign. Kaiser Permanente, in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, partnered with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to develop the film.
