Kaiser Permanente Northwest Awards $9,500 Grant to the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington

August 6, 2015

[Vancouver, Wa] August 5, 2015 - The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington received a $9,500 grant from Kaiser Permanente Northwest. The grant will help cover costs associated with the Diabetes Care Program (prescriptions and supplies) at the Free Clinic.

More than 23.6 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes (7.8% of the population) and the prevalence is increasing. Diabetics are more likely to suffer from stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and amputation.

Statistics show that low-income individuals (the population served by the Free Clinic) are more likely to suffer from uncontrolled diabetes due to lack of access to health care. The cost of an office visit and diabetic medications can be an overwhelming financial burden.

“With the high cost of insulin and diabetic supplies this grant means that we can supply patients with the medications they need,” said Kimberly Wolfe, Medical Clinic supervisor.
