Housecall Providers Hosts Return of the House Call, a breakfast symposium featuring Dr. Tom Cornwell

Portland, OR – April 28, 2014 - Housecall Providers, a local healthcare nonprofit will be hosting a breakfast forum at Multnomah Athletic Club, June 4th at 8:00 AM entitled “Return of the House Call”. Keynote speaker will be Thomas Cornwell, MD, a nationally recognized expert in home-centered care and current president of the American Academy of Home Care Medicine.

A panel discussion will follow the key note address focusing on the impact of the modern house call on patient health and health care cost. Panelist will include State Representative for Oregon House District 45, Barbara Smith Warner, Patrick Curran, president and CEO of CareOregon and Benneth Husted, D.O. founder and medical director of Housecall Providers.

“Dr. Cornwell is an outstanding physician beloved by patients and esteemed by colleagues. He is an expert and tireless advocate for home-centered medicine. Above all, he is a visionary with the courage and faith to step into the future – where patients receive the care they need in the setting that is best for them - and ultimately, the most economical,” stated Husted.

The event coincides with the beginning of Housecall Providers third-year involvement in the national demonstration project, Independence at Home. The demonstration, through the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, is testing whether primary medical care in the home can decrease emergency department visits and hospitalizations so often seen in the medically fragile, homebound population.

In 1997, Dr. Cornwell created HomeCare Physicians in Bloomingdale, IL, a nonprofit medical practice that has made over 85,000 house calls to more than 6,000 homebound patients. Personally, he has made over 31,000 house calls – more than any other doctor in the country. Dr. Cornwell currently serves as medical director of the recently created Institute to Advance Home-Centered Care whose mission is to spread the concept of home care medicine and supportive services to enable people to age in place.

“We are looking forward to a very informative discussion and hoping that attendees come away with a much better understanding of the critical role house calls play in caring for the vulnerable, homebound population,” stated Housecall Providers Executive Director Terri Hobbs.
