Health Share of Oregon Welcomes 102,000 New Members

February 1, 2018

(Portland, OR) -- On December 21, 2017, Health Share of Oregon, the state's largest coordinated care organization (CCO) serving Oregon Health Plan (OHP) members in the tri-county area, learned that it would welcome over 100,000 new members after the other area CCO, FamilyCare Health, decided not to renew its contract with the Oregon Health Authority.

"On February 1, after a six week transition period, Health Share is ready to welcome these new members," said Janet Meyer, Chief Executive Officer for Health Share of Oregon. "This has been a major undertaking in a short amount of time, and our team, health plan and provider partners continue to take steps to ensure that Health Share's newest members receive the physical, behavioral and dental care they rely on through the rest of the transition and beyond."

Health Share provides members a choice of four physical health plans for medical coverage--CareOregon, Kaiser Permanente, Providence and Tuality--and 9 dental plans. Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties manage Health Share's mental health and substance use benefits through a regional network of providers.

Oregon Health Plan members will not lose coverage due to this transition. The OHP benefit package is the same for all CCOs, and members and providers should keep all previously scheduled appointments. Health Share's plan partners will honor prior-authorizations and provider relationships for up to 90 days for physical health (through April 2018) and up to 180 days for mental health and substance use care (through July 2018).

"This announcement and transition may have been sudden, but Health Share, its partners and community have quickly stepped up to safeguard vital care and services for our most vulnerable citizens," said Eric C. Hunter, Chair for Health Share's Board of Directors and President and Chief Executive Officer of CareOregon. "CareOregon and all Health Share partners will do everything possible to avoid or correct disruptions."

New Health Share members should expect a welcome packet in the mail on or before February 1. The packet will have all the information they need to access care and services. Members can also call Health Share's New Member Welcome Center (1-833-278-4215) or visit HealthShareOregon.org/NewMembers to learn more.

"The very vision of the coordinated care model is to care for individuals based on the needs of the community as a whole," said Ed Blackburn, former Vice-Chair for Health Share's Board of Directors and former President and Chief Executive Officer for Central City Concern. "There's a great opportunity in this transition to truly streamline community investments and advance health and wellness based on region-wide data and best practices--resulting in better health, smarter spending and healthier people."
