Health Indrustry Leaders To Discuss Climate Risk

Public and private health sectors face the increased demand, supply disruptions and infrastructure challenges that are expected in a changing climate.
November 3, 2014

PORTLAND, Ore. (October 31, 2014) – On November 21, 2014 at the World Trade Center in Portland, health sector leaders will address a question essential to the future of health care delivery:  How can we understand, reduce and mitigate the risks posed by a changing climate? Event registration for Climate Risk: What it means for Oregon's private and public health care sectors is now open. The public is welcome, and members of Oregon’s health care industry are encouraged to attend.

In the past year, both national and state studies have raised concerns about how unmitigated climate change will result in exacerbated chronic health conditions, extreme weather disasters, and new diseases as well as supply chain interruptions, stressed infrastructure and challenges to the ability to contain costs. The forum will examine Oregon’s healthcare industry, its preparedness to adapt to change, and what investments are necessary to mitigate impacts.

The forum will feature a keynote address from Jon Utech of the Cleveland clinic, an institution that is leading the industry with a comprehensive response to the environmental issues of the 21st century. Oregon Public Health Division Director Lillian Shirley will also share highlights from the 2014 Oregon Climate and Health Profile Report. The forum will also feature a panel of speakers from Oregon’s health care sector to discuss strategies to address climate change impacts.

WHO: The forum is convened by Moda Health, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Environmental Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility, American Lung Association Oregon chapter, and Health Care Without Harm.
