Health Hires on Job Fit: It Goes Both Ways

You’re a great fit for the job – but is the job a great fit for you?
March 5, 2015

As a job seeker in any field, more often than not, your focus is on impressing potential employers. Throughout the hiring process, whether you’re submitting your initial application, interviewing, or discussing your compensation package, it’s pretty darn important to demonstrate that your professional background, education, personality and work ethic make you a perfect fit for the role they’re looking to fill.

Good first impressions should be mutual. When you’re trying that hard to impress a hiring manager, it can be difficult to remember to ask yourself whether you are impressed with them. Does their company have the markings of a quality employer? Do they deserve to have you on their team? Do they have what it takes to keep you professionally fulfilled for the next two, five, or ten years?

Know what you want in an employer; they'll thank you for it. When you’re looking into a new job, think about what you want as a healthcare professional. Maybe, for you, it’s all about the paycheck or the benefits. Maybe you want to be a valued member of a close-knit team. Maybe you’re looking for opportunities to learn a new set of skills or develop a new area of expertise. Maybe you want more responsibility than you’ve had in the past.

These are opportunities and assets that you can look for when you’re researching new jobs and that you can ask about in interviews. The person interviewing you will thank you for it – they want you to be a happy, engaged employee that will stick around for the long haul. If the position they’re offering doesn’t meet your needs, you’re unlikely to be or to do any of those things for very long.

Knowing your own values will help you find a job that you value (and vice versa). As you look for your next new job, keep your goals and priorities in mind even as you do your best to show that you meet the goals and priorities of a recruiting party. When you get that job offer, you’ll feel truly confident about taking yourself (or not taking yourself) off the market.
