March 27, 2015

PORTLAND, Ore.(March 26, 2015) – U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell today announced a targeted initiative aimed at reducing prescription opioid and heroin related overdose, death and dependence. Deaths from drug overdose have risen steadily over the past two decades and currently outnumber deaths from car accidents in the United States.  For more information, see here.

Here in Oregon, our state leads the nation in abuse of opioids, with the highest rate of nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers in 2012. And in 2013, almost 1 in 4 Oregonians (908,000) received at least one prescription for opioid medications, many unused and stored unsafely.
