Governor Brown Affirms Commitment to Stabilizing Health Care Costs for Working Families

July 7, 2017

(Salem, OR) — Today, Governor Kate Brown issued the following statement on HB 2391:

"HB 2391 is critical to protecting the health care coverage of Oregonians and stabilizing the commercial insurance market. Any delay would jeopardize the care of more than 1 million Oregonians who rely on the Oregon Health Plan, drive up costs for Oregonians who buy their insurance on the individual market, and limit health care options for rural Oregonians.

"By funding the Oregon Reinsurance Program and bringing stability to the marketplace, HB 2391 provides a much-needed reprieve for more than 217,000 Oregonians on the individual market. By holding down 2018 individual rates by six percent, the Reinsurance Program provides support for working families and encourages insurers to offer coverage in rural areas where fewer plans are available. These Oregonians have experienced the highest rate increases and most limited choices in recent years.

"Oregon cannot afford to threaten the health care coverage of more than a million Oregonians. I am proud that 95 percent of Oregonians have access to health coverage, and will continue fighting for common-sense solutions that protect their access and keep Oregon moving forward."
