VANCOUVER, Wash., Oct. 9, 2017 -Â The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington has received a a $4,000 grant from iQ for Kids Foundation, the iQ Credit Union nonprofit funded by iQ staff and community. The grant will help fund the Free Clinic's oral health program for children. The program served low-income, uninsured children through more than 320 visits in 2016.
The Free Clinic provides preventive and restorative oral health services for uninsured and underinsured low-income children in Clark County. A team of volunteer professionals treats patients in the clinic's mobile dental van.
The children's oral health program provides sealants, screenings, fluoride varnishes and oral health education at Clark County schools and at community-sponsored events. Restorative oral health services for children are provided in the dental van and inside the clinic.
The children who are treated often have multiple cavities, and many have been living with tooth pain for some time. Their dental health is poor, because they have not seen a dentist regularly and their parents may not be aware of preventive methods or care.
"The Free Clinic's goal is to help stabilize families, keeping adults working and children in school," says Executive Director Barbe West. "If children have healthy teeth and mouths, they are better able to concentrate on their education and ultimately improve their overall school performance. We're grateful to iQ Credit Union for supporting our work."
