FamilyCare Proactively Addresses Opioid Epidemic in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. April 18, 2016 -- FamilyCare Health, in collaboration with the Oregon Medical Association, will hold the second of its two-part training series for medical providers on "Safer and Effective Management of Pain" on May 13th. The first session explored effective chronic pain management strategies.

This session will be interactive and case-based. A panel will focus on presenting various cases and introduce safer, evidence-based treatments, including, Physical and Exercise Therapy, Addictions and Treatment, and Alternative Drug Therapy, Behavioral Health Intervention as well as successful tapering approaches to chronic pain. 

The panelist for the second session include: 
Colin Hoobler, PT, DPT, MS writes a health column for the Oregonian and has been a health expert on PBS and KGW Channel 8 News. He also guest lectures at medical schools and physical therapy schools on the scientific basis of exercise therapy in helping treat and prevent a wide range of diseases and injuries including chronic pain. 

Catriona Buist, Psy.D. is a pain psychologist in the Comprehensive Pain Center at OHSU as well as Chair of the Oregon Pain Management Commission and Co-Chair of the Chronic Pain Treatment work group for the Tri-County Prescription Opioid Safety Coalition. Dr. Buist was instrumental on the Back Pain Lines Reorganization Task Force, which allowed access to multidisciplinary treatment for chronic low back pain to those on the Oregon Health Plan. 

Melissa Weimer, DO, MCR, is the Medical Director for CODA, Inc. and an Assistant Professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), Dr. Weimer's research area is the intersection between chronic pain and opioid addiction. 

David Eisen, LAC, MSW, OMD(AM) has been developing and directing integrated multidisciplinary not-for-profit health care clinics for more than 20 years. He is board certified in Chinese medicine and acupuncture and has been in practice for nearly 30 years. David lectures nationally on integrating complementary medical care into mental health and alcohol and drug treatment programs. He is a founder and board member of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. 

Opioid addiction has reached epidemic proportions both nationally and in Oregon, in 2013, 3.6 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers were dispensed in Oregon, enough for 925 prescriptions for every 1,000 residents. According to the Oregon Health Authority, more drug poisoning deaths involve prescription opioids than any other type of drug, including alcohol, methamphetamines, heroin and cocaine.
