FamilyCare Health Invests Nearly $7 million in 2015

Local efforts support improved health, education and health care outcomes for Oregonians

PORTLAND, Ore. February 18, 2016 – Today, FamilyCare Health is pleased to announce it awarded nearly $7 million in 2015 to organizations across the tri-county region to promote and improve health.

As the second largest Coordinated Care Organizations in the state, FamilyCare has a significant impact on the health outcomes of Oregon Health Plan (OHP)/Medicaid members. FamilyCare recognizes the critical role that community partners play in increasing health access and improving health outcomes. Key investments include:

  • Unity Center for Behavioral Health: $2,000,000 for the construction of a new $50 million patient centered emergency and in-patient complex for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
  • Cascadia Behavioral HealthCare: $500,000 to support the construction of a new $20 million community wellness center located at the Garlington Center in the Eliot neighborhood in NE Portland. The Center redevelopment will combine 50 new affordable housing units with a new community wellness center in addition to an expanded behavioral health and primary healthcare service center.
  • Asian Health and Service Center: $2,000,000 to support the construction of the new $13.2 million Asian Health and Service Center located in the Lents neighborhood in SE Portland. The 30,500 square foot facility will provide treatment for behavioral and physical health needs as well as multipurpose space for health education and culturally appropriate programming. * United Way of the Columbia-Willamette: $750,000 over three years to support early childhood programs in the region. This investment underscores the important connection between health and the ability of children to succeed.

Additional investments include:

Health, Housing, and Mental Health Collaborations

  • Human Solutions: $85,000 to support completion of the Rosewood Plaza Apartments, a mixed use rehabilitation combining commercial space for a dental clinic with high-quality affordable housing available for homeless and low-income families living in Rockwood and East Multnomah County. * Quest Center for Integrative Health: $80,000 to pilot the enhanced Access to Wellness, Integrity, and Sustainable Health Project, an alternative model for non-opioid management of chronic pain. This project is a collaborative effort with Rose City Urgent Care and Family Practice.
  • Luke-Dorf/Northstar Club House: $80,000 to create a culinary training program, providing vital job training opportunities, as well as education, engagement, and support for a healthy and active lifestyle to 150 adults living with severe mental illnesses.
  • Housing with Services LLC/Asian Health and Service Center: $120,135 to provide enhanced health and social services to the tenants of 11 affordable housing properties serving low-income seniors and adults with disabilities. The Housing with Services LLC encompasses nine partners serving over 1,400 residents.

Supporting Education

  • Schoolhouse Supplies: $107,800 to provide classroom sets of basic musical instruments throughout the tri-county region to school districts serving low income children. The gift is intended to inspire children to love music, support their daily learning and continuing music education.
  • The William G. Anderson Fund of the American Osteopathic Foundation: $250,000 to support scholarships which recognize outstanding minority osteopathic medical students. These students have committed their studies to osteopathic principles and practices, have excelled academically and have proven to be a leader in addressing the educational, societal and health needs of minorities. * Gladstone Center for Children and Families: $195,000 to provide family resource coordination services which include medical home connections; follow through with treatment plans; holistic care-coordination; and conducting well child checks and developmental screenings.
  • Benson Tech High School Wellness Center: $79,705 for the purchase of essential equipment and additional mental health services. Partnering with OHSU Family Medicine, Benson Tech will incorporate preventive health into the curriculum, removing barriers to student academic success.
