PORTLAND, Ore. March 7, 2016 -- Today, FamilyCare Health announced an investment of $2,000,000 to the Asian Health & Service Center (AHSC) to support the construction of a new $13.2 million primary and behavioral health care facility located in the heart of the Lents neighborhood in SE Portland.

The 30,500 square foot facility will include the Asian Cancer Resource and Support Center, treatment rooms for behavioral and physical health care, and space for health education, exercise classes, and cultural community events. The project is expected to break ground in 2016 with an expected completion date of fall 2017.

"With this generous grant, we will establish the first Asian Cancer Resource and Support Center in Portland," says Dr. Erik Szeto, Board Chair of AHSC. "This partnership between FamilyCare and Asian Health & Service Center is a milestone for all Asian cancer patients and families in Oregon. Through this grant, Family Care is demonstrating its commitment in reducing health disparities for Portland's diverse and growing Asian population. The diagnosis of cancer is indeed a trying moment for patients, especially those who lack knowledge and support because of language and cultural barriers."

"We've had a long-standing partnership with the Asian Health & Service Center and are proud to continue our support to improve services for the Asian community." says FamilyCare President and CEO Jeff Heatherington.

Nearly three-quarters of Oregon's increasingly diverse Asian population lives in the Portland Metro area (approximately 135,000 people). Asians living in the Portland Metro Area currently make up approximately 8.5% of the total population and the count is expected to reach 12% by 2030. AHSC is increasingly called upon to provide culturally and language specific services and community programs.
