FamilyCare Health hosts second of four-part Opioid Training Series for healthcare providers

FamilyCare Health, a coordinated care organization serving Medicaid and Medicare members in Oregon, holds the second of its four-part Opioid Training series for providers on Tuesday, June 13 with “Opioid Guideline Changes and Next Steps: Taper Plans, Alternative Therapies for Persistent Pain, and Suboxone Induction.”

Opioid addiction has reached epidemic proportions nationally and in Oregon. According to the Oregon Health Authority, in 2013 more drug poisoning deaths involved prescription opioids than any other type of drug, including alcohol, methamphetamines, heroin, and cocaine. This training will discuss changes to opioid guidelines and alternative treatments for individuals who are in pain and at risk for opioid dependence

WHO: Primary care providers, specialists, healthcare media. Event speakers include:

Jim Shames, MD, medical director for Jackson County, who will discuss the new opioid guidelines and how they result in safer prescribing.

TJ Melville, MPT, and Nora Stern, PT, MS PT, physical therapists at Providence Health Services, who will explore new strategies and frameworks for managing persistent pain.

Jessica Gregg, MD, PhD, affiliate associate professor at OHSU, who will focus on the neurobiology of addiction, the role of Suboxone in the treatment of addiction, and the induction process in a primary care setting.
