Familias en Acción Announces Summit:  Palliative Care for Latinos

September 3, 2014

Familias en Acciòn in partnership with Cambia Health Foundation and Providence Health & Services will hold a Summit to discuss Palliative Care for Latinos. Bringing together local and national experts, the presenters will be Dr. Woody English, Former Medical Director for Palliative Care, Oregon Region, Providence Health and Services and Ms. Helen McNeil, Executive Director, California State University Institute for Palliative Care.

Summit participants will gain:

  • an understanding of community resources for palliative care;
  • an understanding of cultural perspectives and experiences Latino patients may bring to medical encounters;
  • culturally sensitive communication skills to offer palliative care and facilitate end of life discussions;
  • strategies to link healthcare and community resources for palliative care

Significant research indicates disparities in palliative care for Latinos dealing with severe chronic conditions. Lack of knowledge of treatment options, low levels of health literacy, and cultural/language barriers limit access for Latinos resulting in lower quality of life for patients and higher healthcare costs.   Working together--health care professionals, social service organizations, patient navigators, clergy, community health workers, and other community services--culturally competent palliative care for Latinos can become the foundation for all patient and family encounters.
