Today the Department of Health and Human Services released updated health insurance enrollment figures. Below are observations from Avalere Health about the data.

1.       80 percent of enrollees are selecting low-cost Bronze and Silver plans. These numbers are likely bolstered by individuals earning less than 250 percent of poverty who can access cost-sharing reductions through Silver variation plans. For those not receiving cost-sharing reductions, they will face high out-of-pocket costs in these plans with Silver deductibles around $2,500 and Bronze deductibles in typically exceeding $4,000.

2.       Consistent with expectations, 79 percent of exchange enrollees qualify for financial assistance in the form of premium assistance or cost-sharing reductions.

3.       As anticipated, early enrollment is skewed toward older individuals with only 24 percent of current enrollees under 35 years old nationwide. However, Avalere Health predicts that older and sicker individuals will enroll early in the open enrollment period, while younger, healthier individuals will sign-up closer to the March 31 deadline.
