December 19, 2012 -- The number of people employed by Oregon Health & Science University reached a new milestone this fall: 14,000 employees. A significant number of those jobs — 1,578 — were created since May 2009, when OHSU reached its lowest total of faculty and staff since the beginning of the recession in December 2007. Some of the most significant recent growth at OHSU has been within the university's missions of health care and education.
OHSU has for several years been Portland's largest employer, with a significant economic impact in the region. According to a recent
analysis by the economic consulting firm ECONorthwest, OHSU net economic output was $2.3 billion in 2007. That analysis also demonstrated how OHSU's financial output circulates throughout Oregon's economy. External businesses partner with the university to provide supplies and services for research, healthcare and education, thereby creating and fueling additional jobs in the community.
"While OHSU's primary mission has always been to improve the health of all Oregonians, we are pleased that in doing so, we have also become a significant economic engine for the region," said OHSU President Dr. Joe Robertson. M.D., M.B.A. "Despite the current slow economy, we have continued to grow and employ additional Oregonians in our efforts to treat disease, search for new cures and therapies, and educate health professionals to care for future generations."
