October 9, 2012 -- Compass Oncology, the region’s largest independent oncology and hematology practice, is co-sponsoring the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Train-the-Trainer Summit Thursday, October 11, through Friday, October 12. The event will bring nurses, nurse administrators and educators together for essential training in end-of-life care.

“Studies show patients have better outcomes after exposure to palliative care conversations with trained clinicians,” explains Dr. Angela Kalisiak, medical director for Compass Oncology’s Palliative Care program. “ELNEC helps nurses recognize the unmet needs of their patients and trains them to be even better patient advocates. By co-sponsoring the summit, Compass hopes more patients in our community and throughout the nation are exposed to healthcare providers trained in palliative care conversations.”

The ELNEC Train-the-Trainer program provides attendees with two days of in-depth teaching workshops. Each new trainer leaves with a 1,000+ page course syllabus and training materials to take back to their communities where they will educate other clinicians in the important subject of end-of-life care.

ELNEC is administered by City of Hope in Duarte, Calif., and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in Washington.  The Portland ELNEC Summit is co‐sponsored by Compass Oncology in Portland, Ore., and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association in Pittsburgh.
